Cronton College 6 Salford Red Devils 50 Match Report
Salford Red Devils U19s Black team shrugged off the previous week’s reversal at Wigan, in what had been their first encounter of the season, to run in fifty points in this week’s outing at the home of Cronton College.
With both Red, and Black, squads having been somewhat ravaged by injuries, in recent weeks, it was a case of all those who were fit enough rallying round, to form a team, to take on the Widnes-based sixth form college.
Once on the field, however, the make-shift nature of the Salford side was well and truly gainsaid, in what coach, Danny Barton, considered to be a most professional of performances, with the Red Devils firmly on top throughout the whole game.
With Man of the Match, Adam Tierney, taking firm control, and organising all of the visitors’ attacking moves, they succeeded in registering a total of ten tries, as a result of some fine attacking rugby, with Tierney’s excellent kicking game helping put them on the front foot and keeping them there.
The game turned out to be a personal success for hooker, Billy Wadeson, who crossed for a hat-trick of tries, the first of which not only opened the scoring, after five minutes, but which was also one of the best in the game, after he scooted from dummy-half, to round the fullback and score under the posts, giving Tierney the first of his five successful kicks at goal.
From that point on the tries came thick and fast, while Cronton, for their part, never let up in their endeavours to stem the tide. They, most deservedly, contributed to the proceedings with a try of their own, mid-way through the first half, to ensure that they were represented on the 6-28 scoreboard before half time.
George Charnock, Ellis Kelly, Adam Tierney, Kai Barker, Josh Wagstaffe, Louis Lord, and Mikey Gillighan, all joined Wadeson in crossing for the remaining tries.
