THE ORIGINAL RED DEVILS

REST IN PEACE, FRANK CASSIDY

Everyone at the club is sorry to hear the news that Frank Cassidy, the former Salford stand-off, passed away on 21st August at the age of 59.

Frank made his Salford debut in a 36-2 win at Barrow on 19th November 1989 having transferred from Swinton a few days earlier for £35,000.

A skilful, clever half-back, he was to make 65 appearances for Salford, his most rewarding season being 1990-91 when the Second Division Championship was followed by success at Old Trafford through defeating Halifax 27-20 in the Second Division Premiership Final. Frank also appeared as a substitute in that season’s Lancashire Cup Final defeat to Widnes.

His final first team match for Salford was destined to be in a Challenge Cup tie against Wigan at The Willows on 2nd February 1992, following which his playing career stalled after suffering a severe neck injury in a car accident.

It was not until April 1993 that he resumed training. However, he then transferred to Rochdale Hornets alongside Salford full-back Steve Gibson, the pair joining Hornets in exchange for forward Bob Marsden.

A Great Britain Under-21s international, he played for Rose Bridge (Wigan) prior to joining Swinton and took over as their player-coach following his departure from Rochdale.
