Salford Red Devils are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of club icon, David Watkins.
One of the very greatest to represent our club, and to ever play our game.
David made over 400 appearances for the Club between 1967 and 1979, breaking multiple records during his time at The Willows, with his 1,241 goals scored still stands as a club record today.
Captain of Salford in our 1969 Challenge Cup Final against Castleford Tigers, Watkins was a key figure in Rugby League and represented both Great Britain and Wales at international level – and was last year inducted into the Men’s Rugby League Hall of Fame.
He was also awarded an MBE in the 1986 New Year Honours list and represented multiple sides domestically and internationally at Rugby Union.
All our thoughts go out to David’s family and friends at this truly difficult time.
