Red Devils Slay Giants To Go Second

The Salford Red Devils regained second position in the Betfred Super League table with a 36-20 win over the Huddersfield Giants at the The Salford Stadium.

The Red Devils welcomed Gareth O’Brien back into the side, alongside George Griffin who also missed the defeat to St Helens the week before.

Tries from O’Brien, Sa’u, Murdoch-Masila, Lui Johnson and Welham saw the Red Devils record their second win over the Giants this season.

The game started off in a scrappy fashion, with a number of early concussion injuries disrupting the opening stages of the match.

It was Huddersfield who struck first, with Leroy Cudjoe forcing his was over for the opening score of the match.

The Red Devils responded well and it didn’t take long for the scores to be levelled. Junior Sa’u found himself in space on the left hand side and the centre raced over to score.

It wasn’t long before the Red Devils were celebrating again. Rob Lui celebrated signing his new contract with a superb try, stepping past a number of Giants defenders to score.

The momentum was now firmly with the Red Devils, and they quickly came up with a contender for Try of the Season. Murdoch-Masila found Johnson with an offload, who them produced another superb pass to find Welham in space, who sprinted away to score.

Huddersfield struck back through Aaron Murphy before halftime and Salford took a 18-10 lead into the break.

Salford started the second half on fire, and were soon back amongst the points as Gareth O’Brien stepped inside the Giants defence to score.

The points kept coming for Salford, as Junior Sa’u burst through a gap to score his second try of the match.

With the Red Devils now firmly on top, Greg Johnson was next to add his name to score sheet, finish off a superb Red Devils move to score in the corner, courtesy of a Murdoch-Masila pass.

Murdoch-Masila then turned from provider to scorer, with a characteristic drive through the Huddersfield defence to score on the right hand side.

The Giants scored two late tries through Leeming and McIntosh, but it was the Red Devils who came out victorious.

Final score: Salford Red Devils 36 Huddersfield Giants 18.
