THE ORIGINAL RED DEVILS

MATCH PREVIEW – ST HELENS VS SALFORD RED DEVILS (ROUND 21)

The Reds are back on the road after two huge results at home, as we face St Helens at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

Currently sat fourth in the Betfred Super League table, Paul Rowley’s side are in a great position to qualify for playoff rugby come September.

Victory against Leeds Rhinos has opened up a six-point gap on seventh, but there is no time to rest or celebrate, with a short turnaround into Round 21.

Here’s everything you need to know before this one:

SQUAD NEWS

The Match Review Panel has forced the only change to Paul Rowley’s 21-man squad, with Tim Lafai receiving a one-match ban for Grade C ‘Head Contact’.

Halfback, Cade Cust is back in place of the Samoan.

LAST TIME OUT

Our last meeting with Saints at the Totally Wicked Stadium needs no introduction.

Coming into the contest in good form, the Reds were confident, but aware of our long-standing poor record of results when visiting the ten-time Super League champions.

The task was made even harder when Jack Welsby and Lewis Dodd crossed in quick succession to hand the hosts a healthy early lead.

Deon Cross dragged Salford back into the contest via a lovely cut-out ball from Ryan Brierley, but a try right on half-time from Mark Percival extended Saints’ lead.

The try-scorer was sent off early into the second forty for a high shot on Jack Ormondroyd and presented Salford with an opportunity to catch-out a tired Saints side.

Dodd scored his second minutes later to widen the gap, but what followed was simply remarkable from the Reds.

Nene Macdonald and Chris Atkin got us back into the contest and then a moment of magic from Tim Lafai – receiving the ball in one hand and flicking it out the back with the other – sent Cross over in the corner.

The Salford faithful were ecstatic, but nothing could match the scenes on the full-time hooter, as we confirmed a first victory at St Helens in over 44 years.
