Salford Red Devils travel to the home of the World Champions in Round 12 of the Betfred Super League.
Full of confidence, Paul Rowley’s side head to the Totally Wicked Stadium after four consecutive victories. The most recent being a memorable 12-22 victory over Leeds Rhinos at Headingley.
The international break maybe threatened to halt progress after success against Leigh Leopards, Castleford Tigers and Catalans Dragons, but a real team effort against the Rhinos sees us move just four points off the top.
Standing in our way this afternoon is the reigning Super League champions, St Helens.
Under the new guidance of Paul Wellens, they have started 2023 with five wins and five losses, but picked up the World Club Challenge in pre-season against Penrith Panthers.
They – no matter current form – pose a significant threat and challenge for our lads, especially at home.
There are attacking threats all over the field, but it’s perhaps timely to mention star hooker, James Roby, who is set to break Kel Coslett’s all-time club appearance record.
Ahead of Round 12, here is everything you need to know:
SQUAD NEWS
There is only one change to the squad that beat Leeds Rhinos in Round 11.
Alex Gerrard – after an extended period out of the team with injury – has returned to the 21-man and is back in contention for this afternoon’s crunch clash.
He replaces Amir Bourouh, who has joined Swinton Lions on a two-week loan. The hooker will be available to face Bradford Bulls this weekend and can build some valuable match fitness in the Betfred Championship.
ROWLEY’S PREVIEW
It feel like a significant victory, at a real-bogey ground last week, but that’s taken to the next level today.
The Red Devils have failed to win at St Helens for a very, very long time – so an even bigger statement could be made this afternoon.
Paul Rowley is aware of these records, but knows how difficult taking on the ten-time Super League winners will be.
He began: “They’re the champions of the world, aren’t they.
“They’ve got the Super League trophy four years in a row. So, indifferent a start maybe, but already one huge trophy in the cabinet, so it would be foolish to underestimate St Helens – certainly at home.
“We’ll just try and concentrate on ourselves and – as we always do – have that underdog spirit, but walk there tall and with a lot of belief in the team, and what we’re capable of.
“We’ve had some good tussles with them last season, in particular. So we hope the weekend is more of the same!”
