THE ORIGINAL RED DEVILS

MATCH PREVIEW – SALFORD RED DEVILS VS LEEDS RHINOS (ROUND 20)

It’s a Saturday afternoon special at the Salford Community Stadium, as the Red Devils take on the Rhinos in a crunch Round 20 clash.

Both sides come into this game with plenty to play for. Salford know a win would open up a six-point gap on Leeds, who currently sit seventh, however, victory for the visitors could bring them level on points with St Helens if results go their way.

Former Parramatta Eels Head Coach, Brad Arthur has taken over the reigns at AMT Headingley for the remainder of 2024 and earned his first win with a dominant display against Huddersfield Giants last week.

The Reds come into the game on the back of an important win themselves; Ollie Partington was the star of the show in a 30-22 victory over Castleford Tigers.

But all of that is at the back of the team’s mind now, with all focus on Saturday’s showdown with the Rhinos – so here’s everything you need to know:

SQUAD NEWS

There’s just one change to the 21-man squad who beat Castleford Tigers last week.

Chris Atkin replaces Cade Cust, with Jack Ormondroyd, Ben Hellewell and Matty Foster still sidelined with injury issues. Adam Sidlow has extended his loan at Oldham RLFC until the end of the season, with Jamie Pye and Kai Morgan also spending the remainder of 2024 with Barrow Raiders and Halifax Panthers respectively.

LAST TIME OUT

You’ll have to go all the way back to Round 1 for the last time we faced the Rhinos. An eagerly-anticipated season opener at AMT Headingley lived up to expectation, with both sides playing tough and scoring some fantastic tries.

Marc Sneyd got the scoring underway with a penalty-goal, but a high tackle from Ryan Brierley – and his subsequent sin-binning – allowed Rhyse Martin to kick the contest level.

Our number seven, perhaps foreshadowing his fine season to come, was the first to unlock Leeds’ defence with a neat grubber under the sticks, which Cade Cust slammed down on debut.

The hosts responded almost instantly, with Ash Handley taking advantage of the numbers to break down the left wing and touch down in the corner.

Ollie Partington scored his first in Salford colours on the half-hour mark, deceiving the ruck and crashing over from dummy-half.

Winger, Handley scored his second just after the break, but a high tackle from Paul Momirovski allowed Sneyd to nudge us back in front via a penalty-goal.

Amir Bourouh became the third player to see yellow minutes later and again Martin opted to bring it level with the boot.

It was perhaps the moment momentum swung and Sam Lisone’s rampaging run, ten minutes from time, was ultimately the difference on the night.
