New signing Luke Burgess has expressed his excitement at the prospect of making his debut for the Salford Red Devils. The prop forward, who completed his move from NRL side Manly Sea Eagles is available for selection in Sundays Super 8 Qualifiers opener against Huddersfield Giants.
Burgess, who made over 50 appearances for the South Sydney Rabbitohs before moving to Manly, arrived back in England on Thursday afternoon, and wen’t straight into training with his new team mates.
Speaking of his arrival at the The Salford Stadium, Burgess was positive about the challenge ahead of him and the team;
“It looks like its going to be a close competition so I can’t wait to start playing, its really good to be back playing in the Super League.”
Five years on since his last his last appearance in England, Burgess has made a name for himself as a hard working and hard hitting Forward, and he is looking forwards to making his mark on the competition again, he said;
“2011 is when I last played over here so I can imagine it’s changed a fair bit, and I’m looking forwards to seeing whats changed, and i’m looking forwards to getting out there with these new lads and getting the job done.”
This years Qualifiers will see the Red Devils come up against Leeds Rhinos, who Burgess made 80 appearances for between 2007 and 2010, winning the Super League Grand Final in the process, and Luke is relishing the opportunity to take on some of big names of English Rugby League, he said;
“There’s some really big games there, like Leeds and Huddersfield, but also the teams below will be looking for promotion to they will be coming out firing, so it’s going to be a good challenge.”
Luke, who will wear the number 35 jersey, will be joined by a second player from Manly, as Loose Forward Feleti Mateo is due to arrive in Salford on Tuesday.
