It’s time to vote for your July Player of the Month.
Paul Rowley’s side are still firmly in the hunt for playoff rugby, with July bringing another four important fixtures after what was a perfect run of results in June.
Two away trips sandwiched in-between two home fixtures saw us face Hull FC, Catalans Dragons, Huddersfield Giants and Castleford Tigers respectively.
The first of which was a tight, but crucial victory over the Black & White’s. Deon Cross, Ryan Brierley and Chris Hankinson were all on the scoresheet, with Marc Sneyd’s goal-kicking proving the difference once more.
Two disappointing defeats on the road followed; one in the South of France, where Salford were beaten 20-0 by Catalans Dragons, and the other a 16-8 defeat against Huddersfield Giants.
However, the Reds did bounce back last Saturday with a convincing performance against Castleford Tigers – Ollie Partington the star of a 30-22 victory.
Four players stood out amongst the rest across July, so here are your Player of the Month nominees.
First-up is a player who may go under the radar across the competition, but his teammates certainly appreciate the hard work and dedication he brings to the team – Shane Wright.
The back-rower suffered a nasty ankle injury in 2023 and missed the rest of the season, so it is nice to see him back playing on a regular basis and back to his very best.
From one Aussie to another – Loghan Lewis is our next nominee.
A young forward with unbelievable potential, Lewis has hit the ground running since his move from Canberra Raiders and become quite a fan favourite – just ask the South Stand drum!
It’s a first nomination of the season for Joe Mellor, who has found a settled role in the team at hooker as of late.
A highlight for him – albeit in defeat – will surely be scoring his 100th career try against the Giants in Round 18. With a trademark scoot from dummy-half, Mellor caught the defensive line off-guard and crashed under the sticks.
Our final nominee is Ethan Ryan, a player who has gotten better and better as the seasons’ progressed.
He may not have the total number of tries he’d wished for in 2024 so far, but he has certainly contributed to some big wins in July.
