We are delighted to reveal Joe Griffiths has become the first signing of our newly awarded Elite Academy.
The Club secured its license in late May after a thorough application process, which signified a huge step in our efforts to retain and develop the best local talent.
It’s perhaps quite fitting that the first member of our Academy squad will be just that – a promising young player who has climbed the ranks at a local Community Club.
Joe is a product of Salford Roosters and has developed his game over the past few years under the guidance of Billy Hill and Shaun Atherton.
He quickly became a standout player amongst their U18s and Open Age teams and joined the development system at Salford Red Devils.
Beginning with the Foundations Rising Stars programme, Joe moved into our Development Academy before quickly progressing into the REDS programme, prior to us receiving the pathway licence.
Since then, Joe has performed at a very high level across a multitude of positions; including fullback, centre and winger.
Known for his blistering pace and try-scoring ability, he was a key part of the Development Academy side that reached last year’s Grand Final against Castleford Tigers.
Alongside six of his Salford teammates, Joe was selected to represent England’s U17s in a tour of France not long ago, where he was named Player of the Tournament for his performances.
On becoming our first Elite Academy signing, Griffiths has said: “It is an honour to sign for the Red Devils and I can’t wait to start training with the team.
“My dream is to play rugby professionally and I am extremely grateful for this opportunity. I have only ever played rugby league locally at community level for Salford City Roosters and then as part of the Rising Stars and Development Academy at Salford.
“I can’t thank the coaches from Roosters and the Development Academy enough for what they have done for me and I’m looking forward to repaying them through my performances on the pitch with the Red Devils.”
Head of Youth, Mark Moran added: “We are incredibly proud of Joe’s progress and how he has developed within the Salford pathway.
“From the Rising Stars programme to the Development Academy, and then through the REDS programme – which was already producing talent before we gained Elite Academy status – Joe has worked incredibly hard and shown great dedication to reach this point.
“He will be the first of many and truly demonstrates the potential of our newly established Elite Academy to nurture local talent.”
A huge congratulations to Joe from everyone at the Club and we look forward to what he can achieve in a red and white jersey.
