It is with deep regret that we have learned of the passing of former Salford loose forward, Hughie Duffy, on 30th December, 2017. One of the few Scotsmen to have played for the club, he was born in Shotts, Lanarkshire, where he took up playing rugby union with Jed-Forrest RUFC, and gained representative honours for Scotland, against France, in January 1955.
Shortly after this he changed codes to sign for Salford, and made his debut in a home game with Liverpool City, on 5th February 1955. He was a traditional style loose forward – extremely tough, a clever ball handler, and tremendous tackler. In his two hundred and forty-one outings for Salford, he crossed for fifty-one tries, and in a home game against Blackpool Borough in 1962, he kicked his one solitary goal.
At the end of that season, he left to join Halifax as part of an exchange deal involving their centre, Ernie Critchley, where he stayed for a further four seasons.
His funeral will take place at 10.00, on Tues 9th January, at St Joseph’s RC Church, Woodford Lane, Winsford, followed by internment at Wharton Cemetery.
