It is with deep regret that we report the passing of former Salford player, Fred Smith, last Sunday, 17th December, aged eighty-eight. Born in Warrington Fred played his early Rugby with Rylands bed signing for Salford in 1952. He made his debut for us on 21st August in the same year, away at Whitehaven.
He made a total of 141 appearances in the red jersey, invariably in his accustomed position of fullback. He was an accomplished goalkicker of which he was successful on 91 occasions, which, along with 13 tries, amassed him a total of 221 career points. Attacking fullbacks were a thing of the future back then, so that number of tries bears great tribute to the quality he brought to the club.
Our sincere condolences go out to his family.
