We are excited to reveal Dave Hewitt has joined our women’s backroom team as he works towards achieving his coaching qualifications.
The former England Academy prospect has recently called time on his playing career; one he started at youth level with St Helens.
Hewitt was highly rated amongst his peers, with many, including rugby league icon, Barrie McDermott noting his ability to take on the line and engage defenders.
Alongside a now-four-person coaching team, he will be looking to bring that skill and experience to our attack as the 2025 Championship season comes into focus.
His most significant spell across his playing career came with Oldham Roughyeds, where Hewitt made 115 appearances over his six-year stay, scoring 34 tries and kicking 91 goals.
But he has also represented Sheffield Eagles, Rochdale Hornets and most recently, Midlands Hurricanes.
On his new role at the Red Devils, Hewitt has said: “Due to numerous things off-field, I was unable to continue as a player and I spoke to Mike a few times during my time off.
“Mike coached me at Rochdale and knew I had an interest in going into coaching, and he reached out to offer me a position in his coaching staff here.
“Having time to think about it and Mike welcoming me to have a look around, it was a no-brainer to come in and support the coaches in attack, as well as it fitting around my other commitments – which presented me with another new challenge to stay within the game.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed the start so far and looking forward to the season starting!”
Head Coach, Mike Grady has added his delight of having such an experienced head on board: “I’m really pleased Dave will be joining us on the coaching staff.
He was always looking at getting into coaching when he called time on his playing career; he brings exactly what we are looking for and adds balance to the coaching group.
“He has a wealth of experience in the professional game as a player and a leader, this is already benefitting our playing group during this pre-season.
“I’m looking forward to seeing him develop as a coach whilst adding value to us as a group as we look forward to the 2025 season.”
